We all know that Ford Motor Company was the only american automobile company of the “big 3″ that didn’t take government bailout money and a recent article in the New York Times says that Ford will have more cash than debt by the end of 2011. So how is it in a day and age where the automobile industry has taken such a hit, that they are able to not just sustain their business, but actually turn a profit? Their ability to exceed the expectations of their consumers in both design and functionality of course contribute to their success but I think there could be more to it than that alone. You see, Ford “gets it” when it comes to marketing in our world today. Marketing in today’s world is no longer about running the coolest tv commercials and having the sleekest magazine ads. It’s about becoming a part of the online conversation that millions of people are now a part of every day whether it be on their work computers or out and about on their iPhones.

Go to the Ford.com website and you’ll see exactly what I mean. From social media links throughout the homepage to the YouTube video where they compare their 2011 Fiesta to a Lamborghini (genius); they are the perfect example of a company embracing the Web 2.0 platform that is the new age of marketing today. Scroll to the bottom of the page and you’ll see links to their Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Flicker and Delicious pages; all of which Ford has a substantial presence on to market and communicate with all of their consumers.

Do you use social media for your business? If so, what platforms you use and why?

33% of Fortune 500 companies now have a corporate blog, 50% have a YouTube channel, 54% have a Facebook fan page, and 65% have a Twitter account. In fact 79% of companies globally use one of these four platforms. Social Media is big business and we’re only going to see more of it as these new lines of communication and community evolve.

iStrategy2010.com put together a great infographic that shows how these companies are using social media in their business. There is obviously much to be learned from companies that have built businesses as successful as those listed in the Fortune 100. In fact, when companies like Pepsi Cola decide that after 23 years of being one of the top advertisers during the coveted Super Bowl advertising slots, that they will instead spend those marketing dollars on Social Media in 2010, you know it’s a big deal.

But you may still ask: How can I use Social Media for my business? I tell my clients to start with a Facebook Fan Page. Social Media is all about becoming involved in the conversations that hare happening online as we speak. Fan Page’s are a great place to showcase what you do, begin to build a network of “fans” through your existing friends on Facebook and become a part of the conversation. Once you’ve established your company on a Fan Page, you can then begin to explore the benefits of using other Social Media Platforms like Twitter, YouTube and FourSquare; and the list goes on and on and on.

Creattica is one of the Envato family websites devoted to providing ideas and inspiration to the design community. I chose the rounded corner die-cut for my business cards to compliment the circular sticker icon in my logo. The gunmetal gray and white background allows the sticker icon to pop off of the card and all together has contributed to much conversation at the business card exchange. I hope to have more representation with some new work on the Creattica website soon!

Sometimes we walk right by spots in our lives that have been so far-gone, that no one even pays attention anymore.
Dwell Magazine did a great little article about a couple in Seattle that transformed a former lot on a street outside of Seattle that had more or less eroded into a dump, into a great new lot for their new home. Instead of hiring someone to do the construction, they took the time and care to do all of the work themselves. From concrete, to wood, to hot-rolled steel; the couple used an array of materials to create this great little house.

Imaginative design, attractive materials, plus a great story makes for a wonderful little project outside of Seattle in this profiled property in Dwell Magazine last month.

You can read the rest of the article and see more pictures here at Dwell Magazine’s website.

The new stores will not only serve locally roasted coffee and a wide variety of tea, but will also incorporate a beer and wine selection into the menu.
The Starbucks website calls the interior space of the new coffeehouses, “Reminiscent of a European mercantile” and says that the inspiration for the new interiors came from the original Starbucks location at Seattle’s Pike Place Market that opened 38 years ago. They say that the materials used on the interiors are “Eclectic and raw, featuring locally sourced and reused materials that are one-of-a-kind”. You can see the press release at: news.starbucks.com

The chrome laid against the jet black body of the motorcycle is detailed with meticulous white pinstripe details that accentuate the beautiful curves found throughout this beast.
